Chapter Six

The next morning, Vordro stared up at the ceiling as Summer slept on his chest. He’d taken her bare, not even asking if she was on birth control, not that it always worked when it came to Zelthranite sperm. Even condoms weren’t foolproof. If she were pregnant… but would she tell him if she were? Or would she try to hide it and run from him? He hadn’t exactly given her a reason to stay. He’d offered her pleasure, but nothing permanent. Had that been a mistake?

He was due at the Terran Station in an hour, but for once, he didn’t want to go. He picked up the cell phone on his bedside table and sent a message to one of the guards at the station, asking them to cover his shift. In all the years he’d been on Earth, he’d never taken a day off unless he was scheduled for one. But today of all days seemed like a good time to stay home. He didn’t know what to expect from Summer when she woke. Would she be clingy? Would she act like nothing had happened?

Not knowing what she wanted was hell. Did she want him to claim her? The last thing Vordro wanted to do was scare her off. He’d tried to take things slow, to give her time, but she hadn’t wanted that. She’d wanted him. He smiled a little as he thought about her forwardness last night. It had taken him by surprise but in the best of ways. Now that she was in his bed, he’d like to keep her there. He could always ask if she’d stay in his room with him. Or should he go with his warrior’s instincts and demand what he wanted?

Human females had been a puzzle since the first time he’d met one. They were all different, and not just in coloring but in temperament and desires. His people weren’t all identical either, but the female Zelthranites tended to have similar temperaments. Of course, now the females of his world were dying out. All future females would be a hybrid of Zelthranite genes and whatever female the males paired off with. It had been a sad time for his world, but Vordro liked the human females and couldn’t wait to claim one as his mate. He’d just never found the right one. They were pretty, but he’d never felt this consuming need to claim one until now.

He hoped it would be Summer.

Summer shifted and rolled off him, giving him the freedom to move. He rolled onto his side to watch her sleep for a few minutes and then got up to shower and get dressed. He closed the bathroom door so the sound of the water wouldn’t disturb her sleep, then turned on the shower. Not having a plan for the day, he didn’t know what to expect. He hoped Summer would be happy that he’d taken the day off, and thought they could explore the town a little, maybe go see the sights.
